A Beginner’s Guide to the Miles & Points Game

posted by April 14, 2015

When you first start researching what credit card rewards program will give you the most bang for your buck, you are likely to become quite overwhelmed with the choices available to you. But have no fear! With a little exploring and analysis, you can begin earning miles and soon become a miles expert!

alliances1The easiest way to low cost travel, as you may or may not know, is with well worthwhile sign-up bonuses that many of the major credit card companies offer. These bonuses often come with spend minimums, but are easily attainable and usually give you a few months to complete the spend requirement (i.e. IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card offers 70,000 IHG Points after you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months after you open the account).

Redeeming your rewards miles and/or points has never been easier! Although you may have points or miles with one program, you can often use these miles/points with other programs or in other industries. For example, almost all major airlines are members of one of three “airline alliances”, SkyTeam, Star Alliance and Oneworld. This means that if you have points with an airline’s rewards program that is a member of SkyTeam, you can use those miles on any other program that is a part of the SkyTeam airline alliance.

The Well Traveled Mile has a great series revolving around rewards programs and better understanding the in’s and out’s of the industry.
