Non-Bonus Category Spending – Which Credit Card Should You Be Using?

posted by May 14, 2015

For people that have been in the miles and points game for a while, it may seem like second nature when faced with which card to use on different types of purchases. However, besides recently opened credit cards that have a minimum spend that must be met in order to receive the sign-up bonus, do you really know the best card to use for non-bonus categories?

Stack-of-CC-300x285Almost every rewards program has incentives to use their card in certain situations, but things can get a bit tricky when there are very few (or zero) cards that offer bonus points/miles in the category you are buying something. If you do not own any cards that award annual spending bonuses or are uninterested in these cards, the following are the best, and most flexible, reward cards for getting the most back on your purchase:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • American Express Membership Rewards
  • Starwood Preferred Guest
  • Citi ThankYou

The Frugal Travel Guy said it best, “There is a direct correlation between which credit card should be used for non-bonus credit cards and which points are worth the most. The important thing is that after min. spend requirements are met, your non-bonus category spending is made with a flexible points-earning credit card (at the very least), preferably one from Chase, Amex or one of the Amex SPG cards.”
