3 Annual Credit Card Bonuses that Justify the Annual Fee

posted by July 13, 2015

For most of the year, points and miles that you earn through credit cards seem to be a great source of free benefits. Each year, however, the annual fee must be paid, and we are reminded that these benefits are not actually free. In an effort to retain your business, many companies offer annual bonuses for renewing your account, such as extra points or free nights at a certain hotel chain. We took a look at these bonuses, and determined which ones were sweet enough to justify the annual fee. Here are three of our favorites:

  1. IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card

If you plan on staying at an IHG property, then this free night may come in handy. With an annual fee of $49, the only way not to get value out of this bonus is if you don’t use it – some IHG properties can cost up to $500 per night!

  1. The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card

Although the annual fee is high at $395, if you have had to pay for stays at a Ritz-Carlton property, the bonus is well worth the cost. You will receive three upgrades to the Ritz-Carlton Club Level (valid on stays up to 7 days), each valued at approximately $200 a piece. Even if you don’t value the upgrade, they include a $300 annual air travel credit, which almost pays for the annual fee on its own.

  1. Delta Reserve Credit Card from American Express

Another high annual fee at $450, this card offers a great annual bonus for frequent Delta customers. In addition to a companion certificate valid for first-class tickets as well as economy, you get Delta Sky Club access, upgrade priority, and the opportunity to earn Medallion Qualification Miles. If you fly Delta, these benefits justify the annual fee.

Remember- it is also important to ask the card company to waive the annual fee when renewing your card. Although they may not be able to do this, they will often throw in extra points or rewards in order to keep you as a customer.
